The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark, commonly known as Saint Mark's Basilica, is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice, northern Italy.Construction on Saint Mark's Basilica began in the early- to mid-9th century when Venice was a powerful seafaring city-state known as the Republic of Venice. Completed between the 11th and the 13th centuries, design elements include Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine styles, all of which give Saint Mark's its eclectic look.
